Contactless identifiers (cards, key chains) are widely used in security systems, are used to access garages and parking areas.
Unlike low-frequency systems, systems with transponders operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz make it possible to achieve a reading distance of up to 1.5 meters. The identifier can be, for example, attached to the windshield of the car, and read by the barrier control device or be a badge on the chest of the hotel staff and read by the access controller to the service premises.
For moving objects, the speed of data transmission is also important, and for security systems, the ability to write to the card various kinds of additional information.
"Electronic stamp" for animals
RFID technology can be successfully used to identify cattle in livestock (registration of their movements, past diseases), to study the behavior and migration of wild animals. In the first case, usually a tag with an identifier is pinned to the ear of the animal. In the second - implanted under the skin of the animal in the form of a small glass capsule. According to the laws of some countries, even pets without such an operation "marking" can not be carried across state borders.
Usually for marking animals, tags operating at frequencies of 134 KHz are used.
Baggage sorting at airports
Timely delivery of passengers to the final destination along with their baggage is one of the good tone rules for any airline. Major airlines carry millions of pieces of baggage every day, and if they are handed over, it is necessary to check millions of matching labels and the passenger’s identity. Luggage labels can be made using contactless identification technology using Vicinity tags such as I-Code or Tag-it. For the convenience of the passenger, text information can also be applied to the labels using the printer, but the main work on baggage sorting can now be performed without the participation of the service personnel on a fully automated line.
The advantage of an automated baggage sorting line using RFID technology over analogues using only bar coding is as follows:
- the label can now store much more data with the same physical dimensions. Thus, there is no need to organize a centralized database with information about the route of baggage.
- Do not need direct visibility and much higher reliability of reading tags.
- the printer used to print traditional labels with minimal modifications can be used to print on a ribbon with RFID tags.
- the massive supply of tags allows you to minimize the cost per unit of consumables, and hence the cost of operating the system.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommends the use of 13.56 MHz RFID tags of ISO / IEC 15693 to identify baggage. In 1999, British Airways conducted one of the first experiments on baggage marking with such tags. 75'000 pieces of baggage were transported between Heathrow, Manchester and Munich airports. This example proves the high efficiency of using such sorting technologies.
Document flow
RFID tags can be successfully used in the workflow systems of large institutions, where the loss of a folder with documents or its late return can cause many problems. Contactless tags allow you to quickly and easily find documents, as well as keep a protocol of access to them.
Each document folder is supplied with a contactless label with a unique identification code, as well as textual information for visual recognition. Description of documents corresponding to this unique code are entered into the database. A folder can be assigned certain attributes, such as its retention period, permission to move, access rights to it.
Employees of an institution can easily find the necessary folder with documents by entering a request from their computer into the document management system.
Timing in sports
There are many kinds of sports in which it is necessary to measure the time when an athlete goes the distance, or to mark the fact of his arrival at any remote point of the track. If there are more than a dozen athletes, then this is already a rather tedious task.
This is how it was decided during the traditional Boston Marathon. This is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most prestigious marathons in the world - more than 10 thousand runners take part in it, and it is considered to be the Mecca of all marathoners. This is the only marathon in the world that has been held for many years without a single break.
Contactless tags were attached to the sneakers of the marathon participants. At various sections of the track, approximately every three miles, athletes ran past the reader. The time recorded at the same time was transferred to the database, and updated information about each of the runners immediately appeared on the official website of the Boston Marathon.
